Sample Residential Program Contract

A. DESCRIPTION OF THE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS

Canterbury House is the Campus Ministry Center of the Episcopal Church at the University of California at Berkeley. It is owned and operated by the Berkeley Canterbury Foundation, an institution of the Episcopal Diocese of California, whose purpose is to conduct the Church's ministry at the University.
The residential programs at Canterbury House are an important part of the Foundation's overall ministry activities which are centered at Canterbury House.  It is an interfaith, intercultural and international living arrangement in which mutual sharing, learning and personal growth are fostered through community service, as well as respect and appreciation for the beliefs, culture, traditions and experiences of others.
The Executive Director of the Foundation supervises the residential program along with other programs of the Foundation.

B. MEMBERS OF THE SERVICE LEARNING COMMUNITY AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES AND PROCEDURES

  1. PURPOSE OF SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM: :  to facilitate learning, personal growth and international understanding by engaging in, and reflecting on, service to the larger community.  In addition, living in close proximity in such a program requires and fosters an open, accepting attitude, a willingness to share, and a respect for other persons' individuality and privacy.

    PURPOSE OF SUMMER PROGRAM: to facilitate learning, personal growth and international understanding through the celebration of personalities, cultures, traditions and faiths from every part of the world. In addition, living in close proximity in such a program requires and fosters an open, accepting attitude, a willingness to share, and a respect for other persons' individuality and privacy.

2.  PROGRAM COMPONENTS (SERVICE LEARNING  COMMUNITY):
a)  On the first Saturday following the beginning of the semester, all residents join in a half-day retreat away from Canterbury House.  The purpose of the retreat is to deal with orientation/business, set the semester schedule (Wednesday evenings and Service Day), build community, and just relax.
b)  Each member of the community commits to approximately 50 hours of community service per semester.
c)  On eight Wednesday evenings during the Semester, from 6-9pm, all residents join in a common meal and program (each resident will assist two others in preparing the common meal on one Wednesday).  Program objectives are to explore and share some aspect of what the member's involvement in community service means both to that individual and to the community.
d)  On one day during the semester (normally a Saturday), the Service Learning Community will engage in a service project as a group.  The date of the project will be determined at the Retreat.

Notes:  Each resident is expected to assist in the planning and presentation of either the Retreat or programs.   If the retreat, a meal or program must be missed, the Executive Director should be notified as far in advance as possible.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS (SUMMER PROGRAM):
a) On five Tuesday evenings during the summer, from 6-9pm, all residents join in a common meal and program (each resident will assist two others in preparing the common meal on one Tuesday). Program objectives are to explore and share some aspect of national or international life, e.g. culture, the arts, religion, geography, politics.
b) Each resident is expected to assist in the planning and presentation of either the Retreat or programs. If  a meal or program must be missed, the Program Director should be notified as far in advance as possible.

3.   ELIGIBILITY: Residents must be students at the University of California at Berkeley [there is some flexibility to this requirement during the summer]. New residents will be selected after an interview with the Admissions Committee and/or the Program Director following submission of a written application. Only those continuing students who have honored previous contractual agreements will be eligible for renewal of contracts.

4.   OTHER BUILDING USE: Residents understand that Canterbury House is a Center for all of the Foundation's ministry programs and that non-residents participating in those programs share use of the first floor common room-lounge, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor areas with residents.

C. IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, THE UNDERSIGNED AGREES TO THE FOLLOWING:

  1. PERIOD OF RESIDENCE: Each contract period is one academic semester long, as defined by the University's academic calendar.
  2. FINANCIAL TERMS: Program Fees of $xxx are payable on the first day of each month; such sum covers private bedroom, kitchen privileges, the opening retreat and a weekly meal on those Tuesdays when there is a common meal. Utilities will be billed monthly at the rate of 1/20th of the total building's usage during the prior billing cycle, plus $3.25 for wireless access.  An additional $50 a month provides a parking space for the resident's car. [Note:  A late fee of $20 is charged if Program Fees are not paid by the 15th day of the month.]  Checks should be made payable to the Berkeley Canterbury Foundation.
  3. WORK SHIFT: Each floor's residents shall organize themselves to keep the kitchens, bathroom, stairways, halls and other common areas clean and in good order.
  4. DEPOSIT: Upon acceptance into the Service Learning Community, residents shall pay a $350 deposit; the resident's place in the community is not assure until the deposit is received. It is NOT refundable if the agreement is broken before occupancy. It is refunded at the close of the period of occupancy, less any charges for cleaning, loss, or breakage. Both room and assigned kitchen areas (including refrigerator) are to be left clean and in order when checking out before deposit is returned.
  5. EARLY TERMINATION: The Foundation and the resident may terminate this agreement by providing thirty days notice, but NOT within six weeks of the end of a school term, except for reasons which affect the health and safety of residents, in which case the Foundation may terminate this agreement immediately.
  6. ROOM ASSIGNMENT: When a room becomes vacant, the choice of moving into it is determined by seniority of one's residency and by permission of the Executive Director. New residents may or may not have a choice of rooms, depending on the number of vacancies.
  7. FURNISHINGS: Residents supply linens (sheets, pillow cases, towels), blankets, study lamps and personal articles. Residents are responsible for unnecessary wear, breakage or loss of House-supplied furnishings. Such furnishings are to be moved from rooms only with permission of the Executive Director.
  8. HOLD HARMLESS: Residents understand that Canterbury House is NOT earthquake proof or secure against intruders. Residents must take responsibility for the security of their personal property. Residents agree to hold harmless Berkeley Canterbury Foundation, Inc., the Episcopal Diocese of California and other Episcopal Church entities, their officers, employees, any agents for and against claims, demands and judgments for injury or damage to persons or property invited, brought or otherwise allowed upon the premises arising out of or resulting from earthquake, fire, explosion or other natural disaster or the negligence, misconduct, unlawful or criminal act or acts of residents, guests or third parties known or unknown. Residents desiring to be insured against such loss or damage must obtain their own private insurance.


It is also understood that the Foundation is NOT responsible for personal property lost or stolen, and that any such property left at Canterbury House after the period of residency is concluded may be disposed of by the Foundation.

  1. All laws in regard to liquor and other drugs are in effect at Canterbury House. No pets are permitted. Smoking is not permitted inside the house and outside only in designated areas. Offering one's room to a non-resident during semester breaks or at any other times may be done only with permission of the Executive Director.
  2. Each resident accepts the rules of common courtesy in regard to noise, privacy and other violations of interpersonal relationships.
